Cameron keeping his eye on PR surrounding Libya action

David Cameron recently announced that British forces were in action over Libya. He announced that he thought the decision to take action was ‘necessary, legal and right’ and plenty of people agreed with him. Cameron pointed out that Gaddafi had been practicing brutality with his people and it this way, his image was created as someone who was dispensing justice. However, the more difficult times in public relations terms are yet to come. It’s difficult to predict what the cost of this action will be, in both financial terms and also in terms of human life but the cost will have a massive impact the public image of the decision to take this action. Cameron’s reputation as well as the image of the decision to take the action is going to be greatly helped by the fact that a number of Arab States have shown their support but things could prove a little more difficult for Cameron as the event unfolds. Cameron might have to continually justify his decisions if forces become more involved over in Libya and might find himself having to remind the public why this action is being taken; he wants to be seen as a responsible leader, doing the right thing; not someone who is trigger happy and moving too fast. It’s going to be a tough job in terms of public relations, but will be interesting to see if lessons have been learnt from Iraq. Share this
