Just one tiny aspect of your life can be hugely damaging as Prince Andrew is just finding out. A friend of his, Jeffrey Epstein, who is an American businessman is also a convicted sex offender. And Prince Andrew’s insistence to stay in contact with him has caused a media stir and calls for him to resign from his post as UK trade envoy. Prince Andrew’s image has already been damaged, but has it gone beyond the point of repair? Well it’s definitely now a case of crisis management and Prince Andrew needs to take control of the situation before it gets even more out of hand. But being a member of the royal family, it’s more difficult for him to publicly state his opinion. A third party is taking control of the message to be portrayed and this lack of personal control over the situation could make it more difficult for Prince Andrew to recover from the situation. The mixed messages that are coming out of Downing Street are also not helping with the crisis management. This could make the crisis continue for a lot longer than necessary. It will be interesting to see if and how Prince Andrew recovers from this particular episode, but it certainly is a challenge for even the most practised of PR consultancy.
