Twitter has now been operating for five years. And it has proved to be an incredibly valuable PR tool as well as a source of entertainment for an estimated 190 million users across the world.
But as well as being a potentially life changing PR tool, it can also be very dangerous, so care needs to be taken when using it.
For example, furniture store Habitat has been under fire recently and have been accused of exploiting the situation in Iran to try and increase interest in their products.
The company used ‘Iran’ and ‘Mousavi’ hashtags at the end of its messages so that anyone looking for information on these subjects would come across their products.
When Twitter users started to react negatively, the posts were quickly removed and Habitat commented that the tactic had been unauthorised.
But despite little slip ups such as this one, Twitter has completely changed the world of PR and the world in general if some are to be believed. An excellent way to communicate, no PR campaign is complete without an in depth look into the potential of Twitter to help the cause.
