NASA uses lunar eclipse as a PR opportunity

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has managed to turn a lunar event – the recent lunar eclipse coinciding with the Winter Solstice – into a PR opportunity. Scientists at NASA were excited because the Winter Solstice – the moment when the Earth is tilted the furthest away from the sun on its axis - and the lunar eclipse happened on the same day, Tuesday 21st December 2010, within just a few hours of each other. To celebrate this event and promote the agency, NASA’s public relations team planned a number of interactive events. The first of these consisted of two live Web chats with lunar experts from NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama. NASA also provided a live video feed of the lunar eclipse, using footage streamed from the Alabama flight centre. NASA also made excellent use of social media to make this the event of the month, launching a real-time conversation on twitter using #NASAJPL and #eclipse. The agency also dedicated its NASA flickr group to the lunar event, inviting budding photographers to upload their snaps of the eclipse. All of these tactics made NASA the definitive source for information on the night and the following days, demonstrating how to turn even a lunar event into a successful PR opportunity. Share this
