Over the past few years, PR agency staff have become increasingly reliant on social media to get their client names and messages heard by the wider audience.
But there is a chance that public relations professionals will have to reconsider their reliance on social media after William Hague revealed that Britain was under a cyber attack.
According to reports, Hague told the Munich Security Conference in Germany that Britain was under attack. He told them that government computer systems had already been infected and that there had been an attempt to steal data from a defence contractor.
This news will certainly make some PR professionals really sit up and listen as they rely so heavily on social media at the moment. The information that they put out via social media could be much more vulnerable.
But social media is so effective and such a huge part of any PR consultancy that this news is unlikely to put off any public relations agencies completely. As always a PR agency should stay vigilant and be aware of security risks related to online networks, but will perhaps not be completely put off from using them.
