Twitter plays its part in the Rooney/Ferguson PR battle

There have been a lot of discussions recently about the fact that PR is changing. In recent years, public relations have shifted and social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook have become far more influential. And if proof were needed, then these types of sites have just played a huge role in one of the biggest stories of the sports world this year. Wayne Rooney has been the talk of the country for the last few days. He said he was leaving Manchester United and then there was a public relations battle between him and Alex Ferguson to try to win the public over. It looked as though Alex Ferguson was winning but now things have changed and Rooney is staying at the football club. And in keeping with the shift in power, it was on Twitter that the story first came to light. The news that Rooney was sticking with United was announced on Twitter by the Daily Telegraph’s Northern Football Correspondent. It was quickly picked up by a Guardian Football Correspondent and then passed onto thousands of followers. Proof, if proof were needed that Twitter is a powerful medium and can make and break a story just as well as it can make or break a career. Share this
