Women make up 51% of the UK population and 47% of those active in the labour market, but are the largest under represented group in terms of participation in enterprise. Despite some progress in recent years, the gap between male and female entrepreneurship in the UK remains stubbornly wide.

Potion’s managing director Sue Rizzello is one of a group of Women’s Enterprise Ambassadors, which were appointed in 2007 as part of a UK government initiative to encourage more women into business and provide business support to those who take the plunge. It came about as a result of a case study programme which Potion executed for SEEDA that year, which aimed to promote six successful businesses in the region.

Because women are often motivated differently than men, and still face different challenges in integrating work and home life successfully, they can face some barriers in business. Their initiatives can often be less well financed at the outset, and they habitually run with lower ratios of debt finance. All this adds up to real constraints when it comes to discretionary spending on things like marketing – and they can lose out as a result.
